WII Fitness, Home Fitness Workout from Nintendo

Posted on 15 July 2008 by John Allen Mollenhauer "JAM"

Yes, even Nintendo is getting into the home fitness workout business. I think they did it unintentionally though when they produced WII. This video game was fun and I can see myself playing again!

This was the first time I tried the game, with my friend Michele. It was Friday night. That was my warm up period, just swinging and stroking and having fun. Actually I have to say I had fun each time I played all weekend. Yes, I played multiple times especially when I was challenged to to best Michele’s WII Fitness Age (the score you get when you take the fitness challenge) of 30. My best was 33… next weekend! ;-)

By the way I had no intention of this being a home fitness workout of any kind, but then after my 10th game or so, I learned it was. In addition to tennis, bowling, baseball, and golf, you can do basic yoga, strength and aerobic training. I didn’t get into any formal training using WII Fit, as I have my own routines that don’t include WII Fitness, but for someone who is just starting out or wants to mix it up… I have to say that WII Fitness will be a great home fitness workout for you.

I was literally dripping sweat in an air conditioned house!

Best of all it will be super fun and something you can do with the kids.

Power is about performance

Posted on 10 July 2008 by John Allen Mollenhauer "JAM"

Power is a level of fitness that enables you to function at a high level and perform well; where you are able to challenge yourself in the daily process of living, in business and in sport, without the risk of acute injury from lifestyle activities; assuming you’re not doing something stupid.

Most people when starting any kind of fitness training, will say they want weight loss or fat loss, first and foremost. But within a matter of weeks, they are thrilled because they can do "20 push ups", "5 pull ups" or countless other acts of stability, strength and power movements.

Fat loss, will happen naturally when you are building lean muscle mass and training in a way that maximizes your ability to perform well at any given time. If you lose site of this one point, you will end up over training, under training, and eventually defeating your efforts.

It’s always about performance first.

Fat Loss is a benefit, not the goal of exercise or training, even though all of us want to be lean. Just don’t focus on it too much, focus on those things that you want to have the ability to do. Set a performance goal, and watch what happens to your weight.

For example… I was training the other day at Run Jump Lift and I was "introduced" to a new workout that looked very compelling and I wanted to try it. It required a sledge hammer and decent amount of fitness…

Imagine having the fitness you need to do what you want. That’s what this is about. It’s not about the workout, it’s about what you want to do.

Power is a an energy level, a fitness level and a confidence level, i.e. feeling powerful.

Power is the result of your lifestyle

Core stability, strength and endurance are the foundation of power.

Being fit, for power is relative to your goals. It’s a concept. It is about being functionally stabile and stronger, and able to challenge yourself. The body of your dreams a result.

Develop your personal fitness system.

Exercise is not for weight loss

Posted on 08 July 2008 by John Allen Mollenhauer "JAM"

What!

You mean… what the hell have I been doing for the last umpty ump years!

Hopefully getting fit that’s what.

If you are working out to lose weight, you are missing the point of exercise. Being active, exercise, working out and fitness training are all about mobility, and developing fitness. They have only become weight loss tactics in the past 50 years, ever since our lifestyles, particularly our eating habits, have become so stratospherically ridiculous.

I have been publishing information on this for years. Your current weight is not caused by the lack of a workout program, it’s caused by an overwhelming, exhausting lifestyle that is resulting in lifestyle choices that result in you becoming overweight. For example if you are eating nutrient poor food you are going to get overweight, because when you eat nutrient poor food, you are left full but unfulfilled and driven to over consume regardless.

When it comes to weight, your focus needs to be on lifestyle, and this including being active. When it comes to exercise, training and conditioning, your focus needs to be on fitness.

Fat loss is a natural benefit or "effect" but even that is hard when the result of your lifestyle is overwhelm and exhaustion. A slow metabolism and the negative effects of stress hormones like cortisoland Leptin, due to lack of recuperation and too much stress, can cause strangely paradoxical effects, regardless of how much you exercise.

If exercise were all about weight loss, or all you needed to do to lose weight were to exercise, your average landscaper would be thin as a rail, especially since aerobic exercise uses fat as fuel. They walk miles per day.

There is much more to this equation for sure, but the point I’m making here is that your lifestyle has to reinforce your training efforts else your fitness efforts, let alone your desire to lose weight, will fall short.

We don’t teach exercise as a weight loss strategy, here at Fit for Power; only that fat loss is a benefit of exercise, particularly in exercise that is hard, brief and infrequent and allows for plenty of recuperation.

Your body needs energy to lose weight. Exercise makes your body more efficient with energy, but in and of itself does not increase your energy. Think about that for a bit.
